Crossing the Heads...
On Sat'dee,Feb 12, a small pod swam the Sydney Heads, from Quarantine Beach inside North Head, to Camp Cove, inside South Head, accompanying life-seeker Murray Cox. It was an experience. No big nasties in sight, but we were into wind and chop all the way, and those flimsy, invisible stinger things, like gossamer beynon threads, that sting you like blueys, albeit not as badly.
That said, both Mrs Sparkle and os.c came up later in the day with rashes from a couple of the stingers.Google Earth measures this swim as 3.1km, dead straight, which is how Mrs Sparkle swims normally. But the os.c GPS-in-a-plastic-bag measured it at 5.34km, which seemed to us a bit far. What was going on? The GPS is known sometimes to do weird things. Anyway, later on, Murray measured it with a piece of string and his Gregory's, and that told him 3.5km. Go figure.
But, as we said, it was an experience. Turbulent and confused all the way across, until we hove into the lee of South Head, below Hornby Lighthouse, where the water calmed and cleared over a beautiful, beautiful bottom, lots of fishies, waving weed, rocks, reefs, clean sand and clear water. We said hi to the newdists at Lady Jane, who seemed monumentally disinterested, if not actively indifferent. Maybe we should have gone in, too, as newdists, then they might have accepted us.
Glad we did it, but shoulders were weary that night.
Mrs Sparkle backed up for the 1km and the 2km at North Bondi on the Sundee, winning her age group in the 1km and seconding in the 2km. She's a trooper!
