Avoca Beach Ocean Swim, 2.5km
|
The Laydies starting wave at Avoca, about to plunge into the rip.

They get all types at Avoca, such as Mr Grizzles and his sweetheart, Matron Gidget.

Rosie Langley otherwise known as Mrs Sparkle's Fairy Oddmoter, always has time for a chirpy cheerio as she meanders by. She must learn in future, however, not to hold her breath under water. Blow bubbles, Rosie. Remember: bubble arm, breathing arm ...

Just around the rocks from the start/finish at Avoca is a plaace they call Mugs Rock. This is why. |
|
| Course |
Circuit running northwards from Avoca Beach SLSC at south end of the beach, to North Avoca along a dogleg course, then back behind the break to the surf club at the southern end of the beach.
On the way back, keep your eye on the surf club. That's where you need to be.
This is a very beautiful beach with a spectacular backdrop. |
| Conditions |
Organisers say: Can be a lively surf on a beautiful Central Coast beach. Start with rip out by rocks and return along the beach with the rip.
We say: This is definitely a lively beach that takes a wave when the swell gets up. The good news is that teh swim starts and finishes in the southern corner, where it's generally more sheltered. There is a strong run-out - a rip - in that southern corner, running out by the rocks. Use it to get out through the break at the start - you will fly - but stay away from it coming back in. It's your friend one way, your enemy the other.

TBA
Traditionally, this swim has very good spot prizes. Don't rush off afterwards. Wait for the lucky draws. |
 |
The boofheads start, and out through the rip they plunge. For many ocean swimmers, this is the fastest they will ever go. Maybe the run out at the northern end of Avalon Beach will get them moving almost this fast, but it will be a close run thing. |

It is a glorious vista at Avoca, gazing northwards from the southern corner towards the northern-most turning booey. You can't quite spot it from here. It is a spectacular backdrop.

This is a lovely beach, with generally good water. It takes a wave, if there's one running, particularly as you get towards the northern end of the beach. But the start and finish is quite protected from the worst of the conditions.
Heed our advice (see above under Conditions). It's a fun day with good spot prizes, too.
