Dawny's Cockatoo Challenge, Sunday, November 18, 2007
As near to paradise as you'll get
Welcome to the season, comrades...

dawny 0715
The sun rises on the new season of ocean swimming, Sunday, November 18, 2007.

dawny 0701
Yes, yes, he was at Dawny 07 -- Glistening Dave, with his box brownie. Here's his first pano of the season.

dawny 0702
We believe this is Lizi Simms, who is related to Dawny joint-organiser, Peter Simms, lugging the booeys down to the pool, one by one.

dawny 0703
Off the pontoon, early. Who wouldn't want to swim here? Really, Dawny 2007 was a magnificent day, in magnificent conditions.

dawny 0704
Glistening Dave again. Now, everyone together: Siiigghhhh!!!

We've had a lot of fun at Bernie Buncle's expense in the past. This year, however, we'll let Bernie speak for himself.

dawny 0707
Colin Reyburn (centre) gives Peter McRae (left) and Tacoma Jim Goins highlights from his swim around Cockatoo Island. Colin is fresh from 3rd male in the Fiji Ocean Swim 10km event. Tacoma Jim is incredulous.

Dr Gabriel Mecs offers free advice to Tacoma Jim Goins on streteching those troublesome hammies.

... After which, the colour came back into Jim's face.

dawny 0714
... and they're off!

Heading for an early morning swim. Balmain.

The Dawny pool, around 7 on a perfect Sydney spring day.

One of these characters is a top-ranked swimmer who attracts love and admiration from all they know. The other is Cyril Baldrick.

dawny0725
A collection of Stray'a's finest.

dawny0728
Everyone has their own method of getting into the water, reflecting their personal idioms. For example, on the left, Chuck Hahn celebrates his birthday by getting some cobbers together for a string of 50s in the pool, one for each year of his age. This year, it was 61 50s on the 55. Cyril Baldock, on the other hand, and a handful of cobbers, for that's how many Cyril has, did 64 100s on the 2 minutes. Chuck, however, follows up with a schooner for each year of his life, too, shared amongst his friends. Cyril doesn't do that. That's his idiom.

Late for the ferry again, the lovely and delicate Cecily Black on her way to 3rd in her division.

Sue Crowe was unsure about doing the longer swim, worrying she was underdone this early in the season. But she did it easily and well. And loved it. Out behind the island, off the wharf, Sue gave us the mascara-ed eyeball. The other good thing about Sue is that she's the guv'na of View swim gear in Stray'a, and here she is doing a swim with us. We reckon it's good to see the swim gear bosses -- well, Sue, anyway -- getting into it and getting to know what it's all about. This is one reason we like View swim gear so much ourselves. Here, Sue sports the lovely Selene goggles, designed by and for laydies, but a lovely, comfy fit for any ocean swimmer. You can buy your View swim gear here on oceanswims.com. Here's View again, this punter -- us -- sporting the sporty Shinari mirror goggles, just the ticket for reflecting surrounding maritime landscapes for clever pitchers. We love them.

dawny0749
Balmain. So close to Sydney.

dawny073

dawny0718
We love these shots of punters dropping into the harbour off the pontoon, if you haven't already noticed. This is Catrin Jonsson.

dawny0723
Warming up in the Dawn Fraser Pool beforehand. Everyone gets to watch.

dawny0726
This young lass was doing her first swim, we'll wager, and whilst she started out well behind the pack in the 1.1km Dawny to Cockatoo swim, she finished in style and received a standing ovation from watching mugs. Well done yourself, lassie. This sport is not about elites. It's about ordinary mugs taking part.

dawny0727
What a glorious day in Sydney Harbour!

dawny0729When the first wave of the peloton in the main swim, around Cockatoo Island, set off from the Dawn Fraser pool set off, comm- entator Rob Duckworth -- perhaps the finest race day comm- entator we've come across -- observed that Peter Burge- Lopez would probably run into the old pilot's tender moored just off the starting line.

Indeed, Peter Burge- Lopez knew exactly what he was doing by locating himself right at the eastern end of the starting line, away from the thrashing peloton, and by taking a more easterly course around the tender, he gave himself a notable advantage in the race to the initial turning booey off Cockatoo Island. So noticeable, indeed, that several mugs in teh succeeding wave, including the oceanswims.com mug, followed his example, and enjoyed a much better run across the channel than the rest of our wave.

He's an old hand, is Peter Burge-Lopez. From our position on the pontoon right above him, we got a good geek at his stroke, something that cannot easily be done in the water. He has a nice, long relaxed stroke, has Peter, although his right hand does turn disconcertingly inwards when it enters the water, twisting the wrist.

Wouldn't be dead for quids.

dawny0739
Inscrutable.

dawny0740

dawny 0742
All froth and bubble.

dawny 0743
The end of the eastern wharf on Cockatoo Island frames the Iron Cove Bridge, where Sydney traffic hustles and bustles, far from this madding peloton.

dawny 0745
Almost home.

dawny 0748
All done.

The James Squire Feedback

Send us your feedback on Dawny's Cockatoo Challenge, or on anything else on which you'd like to vent your spleen ... so long as it's related to ocean and open water swimming. Loosely related, anyway. Maybe someone who has something to do with the feedback swims, or swam once upon a time. Or maybe they know someone who swims. Or they might live near a beach. The feedback section is for swimmers to raise issues and make constructive comments about ocean swimming matters. It also seeks to encourage debate about events and issues of interest to ocean swimmers, wherever they may be.

The best feedback email each week will receive a case of James Squire beer, courtesy of Malt Shovel Brewery.

Read feedback already received.

Good pics by Glistening Dave, although oceanswims.com got a couple of nice ones, too, this time.
