This character couldn't wait to get into the sea, so clear and inviting was the water at last season's publicly inaugural Barney Mullins Ocean Swim Classic. |
|
| Course |
A circuit course around the bay at Freshwater, clockwise. Out and back in through the break, starting and finishing at the northern end of Freshwater beach.
Organisers say: "The northern end is usually a gentle surf with the possibility of catching a wave back into the beach at the end of the swim".
Last season, this swim provided the clearest water of any swim of the entire season. |
| Conditions |
Freshwater is a relatively small, bay beach facing east, thus it is subject to prevailing weather and ocean conditions.
Out and in is through the break. Last season, the swell at this autumn time slot was gentle, the water gloriously clear, easily the clearest water of the entire ocean swimming season. If it approaches that quality even remotely, it will be a lovely swim, indeed. |
| Years run, Starters last time |
The Barney Mullins swim honours a late club stalwart and coach of the legendary Freshwater R&R squad, which produced a number of high profile names in surf life saving, the media and water sports generally. Freshwater SLSC have been running this swim for ten years as a private club event, and opened it to the public only last season, 2007.
Entries were capped last season with 140 taking part. |
| Prizes |
Prizes for age category winners.
Random draw prizes at presentation (winners must be in attendance at the presentation to receive any prize if their number is drawn).
Every swimmer receives a certificate and swim cap. |
 |
See how clear was the water. We resented having to get out of it at the end, last year. But there was a barbie on, and we didn't want to offend the organisers. And there was the presentation. And, even though we were never bloody likely to win anything, there were random draws on offer, too. |

A nice, warm, community swim. Lovely course which, last season, offered the clearest water of the entire season. |

Some spectacular clifftop built environment surrounds Freshwater Beach. And now we can call it Freshwater Beach and Freshwater beach, since the Geographical Names Board, as we understand it, has consented to change the name of the place from Harbord to what everyone calls it anyway. |
