In the lee or in the sea, an energetic swim
Long Reef Ocean Swim

Long Reef Ocean Swim, 1.8km
|

Looking into the sun, out towards Long Reef headland, beyond which they found the Japanese midget submarine, lost since WWII. Lots of interesting things happen at Long Reef.

The lads at play. The introduction of rubber duckies into surf life saving opened up Stray'a's icon pastime to an entirely different socio-demographic group.

Off they go. On this occasion, the wind was offshore, the swell was absent, largely, and the break and rips were non-existent. |
|
| Course |
Swim course will be 1.8km set with start at Poles, out to a buoy, 700 metres offshore, left turn around a buoy, 600 metres north, then left turn back to the northern end of long reef beach. |
| Conditions |
Organisers say: The beach faces the south east and picks up any east to south east swell. This makes it one of Sydney's higher energy beaches. The waves average 1.6 m, being highest in the south and centre, decreasing north of the Long Reef surf club owing to some protection from the outer reefs (bomboras).
Between Long Reef Surf Club and Dee Why Point there are regularly 8 strong rips. The rips and their feeder currents usually detach the single sand bar from the beach. This can form a continuous trough of variable width and depth, but with all currents heading for one of the rips. So be careful!
Long Reef is a relatively popular summer beach offering some protection from the summer nor' eaters. In winter it is exposed and often blown out, but very popular with windsurfers and kite surfers. |

Through the "break". It's a good even start on this occasion. And a good, flat, fast swim.

We haven't done this swim, so it's a bit of an unknown quantity for us. Last year, there was a very strong offshore wind blowing which made conditions quite difficult, although it smoothed out any surf. If conditions come from the east or the sou'-east, together with any kind of meaningful swell, this swim will be very interesting.
Good reports last year from swimmers who took part as to the hospitality of the organising club, particularly. We're looking forward to it. |
