Mollymook Beach, a jewel on the NSW South Coast. Main swim goes from the north end to the south, which means the bottom left hand corner of this pic to the upper end of the beach. Be careful of the runout in the southern corner by the rock platform: it can be ferocious, although everying looks so benign here.
Course Shorter swim follows a circuit from the southern end of Mollymook beach in front of Mollymook SLSC, ending near the start.

Longer swim is a journey from the northern end of Mollymook Beach to the southern end.
Conditions

Mollymook is a very beautiful beach on the near South Coast. Glorious water with a beach break pretty well the entire length, although the start of the longer swim is from a relatively protected northern corner.

Southern corner can be difficult with a strong run out at the toe of the rock platform.

This beach is renowned for dolphins turning up to swim with the peloton. Ageing Matinee Idol John Smeeth, the local laydees swim coach (see John a couple of pics below with his accolytes), claims to have been swimming one cooler Sunday at Mollymook and when he rolled to breathe, he found himself eyeballing a baby whale.

This can be a very special swim. Lovely location. Good opportunity, too, for a solid weekend of South Coast swimming, with Shellharbour on Saturday (with its later start, to accommodate city swimmers), followed by Mollymook on Sunday.

Years run, Starters last time 6th year. 143 punters last year, although this swim deserves many more.
Prizes

First male and female in the 2km event will receive $500 each and placegetters in the various age categories will also receive prizes.

The Dash for Glory will reward the first male and female with $100 each.

The Mollymook swim draws an eclectic crowd, a mixture of sea-changers, regional habitués and big city lawyers, architects and planners. Lots of Canberra types go to Mollymook, too. That's where oceanswims.com was living when he first visited this sleepy little weekend resort, way back in 1977.

The 3.8km Swim is Race 5 in the Hahn Super Dry Fine Ocean Swimmers Series 2008.

The series is a handicap competition, awarding points for each swim in which you finish.

The handicap system weights your time for age and sex and provides a handicap time which is then used to calculate your points. Points accrue with every swim you do. But you need do just three swims in the series in order to qualify to win, at least one of which must be outside Sydney.

At this stage, other confirmed swims are: Sydney Harbour (Mar 2), Stanwell Park (Mar 30), South West Rocks (Apr 6), Tamarama (Apr 13), Forster (Apr 27) and Byron Bay (May 4).

No need to enter. You'll be entered automatically just by doing one of these swims.
Here he is, ploughing assertively and confidently through the break, his adoring laydees in tow: Matinee Idol John Smeeth (centre, of course), always travels with a bevy of attractive swimmers, and the odd accolyte. They worship John down Mollymook/Ulladulla way.  What's his secret? Is it the gracefully greying chest hair? The ebullient manner? Or is it the rings in the nipples?
oceanswims.com says

This is such a beautiful beach and a beautiful spot on the NSW South Coast. Mollymook has a special place in the heart of many young romantics, and many older ones, too, who have long and longing memories. We did the first two of these swims, found dolphins swimming across our trail in the first one, but we haven't been able to get back there since due to congestion in the calendar.

Autumn is such a wonderful time of year to swim in the ocean: clear, crisp air, warm water, crowds eased. Ah!! Mollymook makes you realise how great it is to be an ocean swimmer!
