Sunday, February 10, 2008 |
|
| |
| Event |
North Bondi Classic, 2km, 1km
|

A day at Bondi is a day of colourful pageantry, full of characters, eccentric and bizarre. Some should be approached with caution.
|
| Date, times |
Sunday, February 10, 2008, 9.15am (1km), 10.30am (2km)
Registration on the beach in front of North Bondi SLSC, closes for new entries at 9am

Surf Dive 'n Ski, Waverley Council |
 |
It's a generous runout by the baths at North Bondi. Don't leave it too long before you start swimming, otherwise you'll find yourself punching gratuitously through kgs of sea water. |
|
| Course |
Two circuit swims starting and finishing before North Bondi surf club, heading out past Ben Buckler, south towards Mackenzies Point, in towards the Icebergs, and back behind the break to North Bondi. Longer swim course is M-shaped, coming in towards the back of the break along the outward leg.
Shorter course comes in to the vortex of the M, then heads back to the north end of the beach. |
| Conditions |
The start and finish are in relatively protected corner of North Bondi, which can take a wave if conditions are particularly difficult. It can be rolly and pitchy out the back, but that's a joy. There's a nice runout by the baths at North Bondi to help you get out, but don't get caught in it coming back in. |
| Years run, Starters last time |
N/a. Last season's swim was called off after the first couple of waves, on the grounds of blueys. In past years, this swim has attracted c. 1,000 swimmers, and is building following its establishment three years ago, after the move of the Cole Classic to Manly. |

Organisers say: "It should be noted that each event is a
demanding event and swimmers enter at their
own personal risk and are responsible for their
physical condition. Motorised rescue craft,
oared surf boats, ski and board paddlers will
be patrolling the course for the duration of the
Event. If a swimmer feels unable to complete
the course they should attract the attention
of the water safety personnel and assistance
will be provided.
Swimmers should train for the event and have
a medical check prior to the Event. A swimmer
deemed incapable of finishing the course may
be brought to shore at any time. Any swimmer
who does pull out of the race must notify officials
on the beach immediately.
For the protection
and safety of all swimmers, water safety and
control is under the authority of North Bondi
Surf Life Saving Club at all times." |

| oceanswims.com says |
Such a pity that there are competing swims on offer on this day, and that one is forced to choose amongst them. But, you have to swim Bondi at some stage each season. Swims at Bondi are an event not just for the swim, but for the pageantry of Bondi on a balmy summer Sunday, the sea breeze whispering gently around Ben Buckler.
