If conditions are difficult, both swims will be run inside the bay, in the shelter of Port Stephens.

Dee Why, northern Sydney beach (Dee Why SLSC) - website - email for info or phone Ian Nicol on 0411 316 141.

dy081The Dee Why organisers are proposing to trial a new method of organising wave starts at this swim. Under this proposal, the peloton will be divided into four waves based on anticipated time to complete the 2km swim. They would like punters to turn up on Sunday with likely times they anticipate they would take to complete this swim based on a 2km distance. Alternatively, you could provide them with your times over, say, 1km or 400m - something to allow them to make a judgement about your pace and thus to allocate you into your appropriate wave. If you enter online, please come back here and email us (click here) to let us know the time you nominate.

Not a common array of options these days - either swim or swim and run a scenic course to the headland at Long Reef and return. Unusual prizes, too: Fisher & Paykel whitegood or BridgeClimb passes for first male and female swimmers and biathletes.

dy08 courseThis year, DY also brings back the 800m Fun Swim -- just the ticket for new swimmers, those who would rather ease into the sport by tackling a shorter distance. The Fun Swim will follow a similar circuit course to the main swim but, obviously, it will be much shorter.

Water conditions depend on weather on the day. Other prizes include medals and certificates. Discount for early entry.

All funds benefit Dee Why Surf Life Saving Club, a community volunteer organisation. Massage-a-thon held for public and for competitors. Competitors receive discount if paid with entry.

Minimum age 13.

Rock to Rock, 1.5 km, Noon

Pacific Palms, lower north coast (Pacific Palms SLSC).

This is a delightfully quirky swim (see the course for why) and one of the tour's great discoveries.

Pacific Palms is a small, beautiful, north-facing beach which generally is gentle, kind and with gloriously clear water. Also a late start (Noon), which means you can drive comfortably from Sydney for the day. But don't arrive too late -- registrations close at 11.

We're planning to run again our very popular pre-swim dinner at The Riverside Tavern on the Sat'dy night. It's a better night out than the cinema, and even better -- and this is saying something -- than a night in with The Iron Chef and Rockwiz. More info and entries online coming very soon. South Head Roughwater, 10 km

south head 061North Bondi - Watsons Bay - last season's report. Yes, yes, we know it's on Mothers Day, and the organisers certainly would not list it then if they had a choice. But they don't. Sorry.

But you should do this swim anyway, if you're keen to be part of a genuine, no-exaggeration open-ocean epic. This is one of the great swims: all cliff, from Ben Buckler at Bondi to Watsons Bay. Once you're out, you're committed.

southhead06courseNow at a very good time of year, too. May-June is the perfect time for open ocean swims. The water is clearer and calmer, by and large, rare to see or feel blueys, etc, etc.
