Course
Registration at South West Rocks SLSC. Shuttle provided to start at beach near Trial Bay Gaol.

Course runs nor'east-sou'-west along Trial Bay beach to South West Rocks, just behind the break all the way.
Conditions
Trial Bay faces north and is very sheltered from adverse southerly conditions. Gentle swell growing slightly larger as swimmers approach the finish. Water is usually very, very clear with plenty of sea life to titillate the senses as the swim progresses.

If conditions become heavy, the swim still can proceed albeit with a shortened course.

This is a swim out of the box: glorious water, beautiful venue, abundant sea life, and 480 km from care (Sydney care and stress). South West Rocks is one of the great places on the Australian coast. Time for a sea change.
Make a weekend of it, have dinner with us on the deck at the wondrous Riverside Tavern on Sat'dee night, dive Fish Rock on Sat'dee, if you're into that kind of thing (we did last season -- it's spectacular!)
Years run, starters last time
6th year of revived swim, under tutelage of the legendary Lord Ron of Riverside, Patriarch of the Royle Family. Last season, 145 swimmers. This swim deserves more. It really is a season highlight, exemplifying all the wonderful attributes of a NSW country, coastal swim. This really is the best time of the season to swim in the ocean.
Prizes, categories
"Normal" age categories from 13 - 60+ (separate Male & Female).

Placegetters receive special certificate. All swimmers receive participation certificate.

Lord Ron has established South West Rocks's own tradition of prize pottered plates, from a local potter just along the road at Gladstone. Try hard and win one!

Teams
Teams involve three swimmers in a relay, each leg over c. 900m.

Team age categories are based on total age of 3 swimmers spaced at 15 year intervals.

Team managers should click on-line entry link above to make their team entries. Then team managers must complete the Team Details form (click here) to register team members.

Team entries close midnight, Thursday, March 26, 2009. NB: This is one day earlier than online individual entries.
Handicaps
As well as overall results, this event also will apply a handicap to results based on age and sex, with 1-2-3 placegetters awarded on handicap overall. This is the same handicap system as used by oceanswims.com in the Hahn Super Dry Fine Ocean Swimmers Series 2009 (see below). Indeed, the handicap system was devised by Lord Ron, an engineer himself (rtd), with pestering by os.c

Hahn Super Dry Fine Ocean Swimmers Series 2009
The Gaol Break Swim is Race 6 of 9 in the Hahn Super Dry Fine Ocean Swimmers Series 2009. The series uses a handicap system to event out the bumps amongst ages and between sexes, producing based on your performance in each event of the series. You score just by entering an event in the series (click here for full series details).

To be eligible to win the series, you must swim in at least 5 of the 9 events in the series, of which 2 must be country swims. We don't take just your best swims of the series: we take all your swims in the series. So the more swims you do, the more points you get.

The series encourages you to do more swims and to do more new and start up swims and more country swims.
Dinner at the Riverside Tavern

On Saturday night, come and have dinner with us at a special ocean swimmers dinner at the world famous Riverside Tavern, on the banks of the Macleay River. World famous? Considering oceanswims.com's reach extends around the world, and considering we rave about the place, then we consider the Riverside Tavern to be world famous. It's in a beautiful, riparian location, with a large, lovely deck, very good food, and a wonderful, wonderful atmosphere. It's our favourite pub.

If you'd like to come along, please let us know beforehand (email us by clicking here) including numbers (don't forget 'er Indoors or the old grizzler). We'll make a group booking and you can select your nosh from the pub's menu. Let us know if you change your mind, too.

Please let us know by Fridee night if you're coming along. If you come along without letting us know, you probably still can dine at the Riverside Tavern, but we may not be able to fit you on our tables.

Swim day breakfast
... at South West Rocks SLSC, where you can also register on race day for the swim. Turn up early and have a swimmer's breakfast, too.
os.c says
What can one say about South West Rocks and The Riverside Tavern that does the place justice? Words just fall short. This has become one of our favourite swims on the calendar, not just for the quality of the swim, but for the magnificent location. South West Rocks is one of Australia's coastal gems. Get up there and have a great time.

We look forward all season to this swim, and to the Riverside Tavern.
