Listen to Life in these Islands, by Kaukahi, next to whom oceanswims.com found himself sitting in late January on a flight from Honolulu to Kaui'i. Not only is this a beautiful piece, but they're a nice bunch of characters. When we boarded, Walt, the ukelelist and, as we understand it, a cousin of the late and legendary Brother Iz (Israel Kamakawiwo`ole), who did the ukelele version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
On the plane, Walt sang a new song, then Rainbow. It was enchanting, such that oceanswims.com could not focus on his very good book. We thought Life in these Islands evoked the feeling of Hawai'i beautifully. |

One of the world's great channel swims. Most swimmers take part in 6-person teams, but there is room, too, for a limited number of solo swimmers. Escort boats are necessary and are sourced through the race organisers, Ian Emberson.

Check out the Maui Channel here.  If you peer carefully, risking your eyesight as you do so, you will see a speck, almost on the horizon. It's a whale tale. A real whale tale. Looking out over the channel during our visit in late January, we spotted half a dozen or so of similar tales and whales thrashing about in the sea.
What a magical place!
 Teams of six make this a very doable swim - half hour legs first up, then 10 minute rotations. Good swim for clubs and squads and just groups of cobbers.
If you wish to tackle this swim as a solo, then make sure you get in early. There's lots of interest from the US, and you need to guarantee your spot.

A Pacific classic, from one end of Waikiki to the other - start at New Otani Hotel, beneath Diamond Head, and finish at the Hilton Rainbow Tower. Go to website for more info. Entry online only (through website).
 This is one of the great international swims, drawing mugs from far and wide, particularly the US and a growing contingent from Stray'a.

And, below, looking towards the start, at the toes of Diamond Head at the New Otani Hotel.
Travel packages (see below) include accommodation at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. And you can't get closer to the action than that.

Aumakua 2.4 Mile Swim & Maui Sprint (1mi) |

A relatively new swim on the Monday of the Labor Day weekend. Two distances on offer. Beautiful part of the Pacific and nice option for swimmers who'd rather stay on Maui for a few extra days.
 Check out the sub-sea arch here (at right). The story goes that, if you traverse the arch during the swim, they'll take a few minutes off your time.
This will be the 4th Aumakua Swim. |

oceanswims.com is very pleased to team with Australia's leading sports travel operator, Gullivers Sport Travel, to offer travel packages to Hawaii in August-September 2008 to take part in the Maui Channel Relay, the Waikiki Roughwater Swim and/or the Aumakua Swim and Maui Sprint.
