The Balmoral Swims

Friendly, family-oriented event on beautiful Sydney Harbour beach, raising funds for Children's Cancer Institute Australia.

What you need to know...

  • balmoral logoEvent - The Balmoral Swim
  • Distances - 5km, 1km, 200m Junior swim, 4x150m Open and Junior Relays, and 4x150m schools relay.
  • Venue - Balmoral Beach, near the rotunda.
  • Time/Date - Sunday, April 7, 2019, 7am (5km), 8:15am (Schools Challenge), 9:30am (200m Jr), 10am (1km)
  • Registration - Race day - before 9am (200m Jr) and before 9:30am (1km). No entries to 5km on race day. All 5km entries to be online.
  • Entry fee - 5km - $85 (online only), 1km - $35 ($45 on race day), 200m Junior - $15, Open and Junior Relays - $40 ($10 per swimmer, entering individually)
  • 5km + 1km - Swimmers who take part in the 5km swim will be able to enter the 1km without charge. Simply attend the registration tables after completing the 5km swim to register.
  • Online entries close - 3pm, Saturday, April 6, 2019
  • Under 18 swimmers - Parents/guardians of swimmers aged under 18 must complete the online entry form, not the swimmers themselves. They must include their consent to the entry with full name and  phone contact. Just a phone number, a first name, or a number and first name will not do. Details are to be recorded in the Emergency contact field of the online entry form. Entries of U18 swimmers without this complete parental/guardian consent will not be accepted. Entries of Under 18 swimmers must use parent's email address, not that of the U18 entrant.
  • Age limits - 5km - 14, 1km - 10, 200m Junior - 5-12, Schools Challenge - max. 18 years
  • Conditions - This is a harbour swim, so it will be smooth, although a nor'-easter could whip up a little chop. Unlikely at that time of the morning, though. No break to speak of, no currents, banks, gutters or anything like that. It means is that you don't need to wait until close to swim day to get a feel for likely surf conditions, because there ain't any.
  • Parking - On-street. Be aware that parking in Balmoral is tight, especially on a Sunday. You can get the bus, too.
  • Free entry – 5km Swimmers who raise more than $500 by 8pm on the Saturday before the race as an individual can earn free entry to the 5km Swim. 1km & Junior swimmers who raise more than $200 by 8pm on the Saturday before the race as an individual can earn free entry to the 1km or Junior Swim. 5km swim

(No race day registration available)

The 5km swim is a new event with a limit of 360 swimmers. Swimmers can nominate for Elite category. Numbers in the Elite category are restricted. The Balmoral Swim organisers reserve the right to determine who will be part of the Elite wave. Qualification will be determined by nominated times for the distance as inclluded with online entry. Any entrants who nominate for the Elite category but who are not selected to be part of the Elite wave will be allocated to the relevant gender wave. All competitors must pre-register online and will need to have checked in at the 5km desk 30 minutes before the start to pick up caps and timing tags. Competitors under 16 years are only admitted if they have completed at least one of the SNSW Summer Swim Leaderboard series in under 2 hours and must be 14 years or older on race day. The 5km swim will start at 7am and all competitors will need to have completed by 9am. Any swimmers still on the course at this time will be asked to leave the water. Any 5km competitor who also wants to swim the 1km will need to register for the 1km after completing the 5km swim. In this case, 1km entry fee will be waived if you do decide to swim the 1km. Registration for the 1km is between 8am and 9:30am.

1km swim

Swimmers can nominate for Elite category if they register on-line. The winners (Male and Female) of this Elite category will win the Anita Comelli Trophy. Numbers in the Elite category are restricted. The Balmoral Swim organisers reserve the right to determine who will be part of the Elite wave. Any entrants that nominated for the Elite category but are not selected to be part of the Elite wave will be allocated to the relevant age group wave.

Balmoral Swim for Cancer Schools Challenge (St Ignatius College)

Only St Ignatius College, Riverview students should use this online link to enter themselves into the Schools Challenge Relay event. Each student must do an individual registration. The email address supplied for registration MUST be a parent/guardian email. A student's email address is not acceptable. Once online registration has been completed, please forward your confirmation email to Kim Prodinger specifying your team members or for allocation to a team. Maximum age for Schools Challenge is 18.

Note that the Schools Challenge is entirely separate from other events on the day. School students who wish to take part in the 1km swim should enter that event separately.

Open and Junior Relays

Two categories are available for relay teams in 2019 - Open and Junior. For the Junior relay, all competitors must be aged 8-12 yrs. The winner of the Open relay category wins the HMAS Penguin Shield.

Team members enter individually. The first team member to enter uses the "Create a new team" button and keys in the team name. Subsequent team members then use the "Join a team" button and select their team.

Please note that the Relay is entirely separate from the 1km event. Entry into the 1km event is not linked to Relay entry. You need not swim in the 1km or 5km event in order to be part of a relay team.

The Balmoral Swims are held to support the Childrens Cancer Institute Australia. To support them through a fund-raising page (see event website for info).

You can also donate to the Childrens Cancer Institute Australia when you enter online. Just select the amount you'd like to donate from the options as you enter. Donations over $2 are tax deductible and will receive an official receipt from the Childrens Cancer Institute Australia after the completion of The Balmoral Swim.

Please read this first: Any problems you encounter in entering this event are likely to be caused by browser conflicts. Don't hit the Submit button more than once: you will be charged each time you press it. If you run into problems, if your entry appears to fail, don't try to enter again until you have checked the progress entries list (there's a link to this above), and check your card statement to see whether a charge has been debited. If your confirmation email doesn't turn up, check your Spam and Trash folders. If all these checks return negatives, it's probably safe to try again. But ensure you have the most recent version of your browser, or use a different browser, or try from a different computer. If there's still a problem, email us and we'll sort it out. Refunds are available prior to close of online entries and are subject to an administration fee of $10.
